The Lego Movie 2

The citizens of Bricksburg face a dangerous new threat when LEGO DUPLO invaders from outer space start to wreck everything in their path. The battle to defeat the enemy and restore harmony to the LEGO universe takes Emmet, Lucy, Batman and the rest of their friends to faraway, unexplored worlds that test their courage and creativity.

The Lego Movie 2 offers many of the same features and effects that made the first film so popular, by utilising new and improved characters and expanding on the strong structure that the first film built, it has created a really unique and surprising film! The film was very interesting though, ever since the typical Mcdonald's adverts with the film in and DFS adverts I've really wanted to watch this film and see if it lived up to the hype that the first film brought. Like I said though, the film really surprised me and definitely ensured that I left the theatre with a completely different mindset to the one I had entered with. However, is the film totally awesome or is it easily broken apart like a lego structure? Here are my thoughts.

The beginning of this film was really good and helped to engage and excite us right from the very beginning of the film, this theme really helped to put the film on the right foot for the remainder of it. Not only did the film re-introduce us to the characters within the film but through action and quick paced scenes it really helped to keep us up to date with changes that had been made in their universe during the two films. Not only did this help to remove any confusion but it also added a really personal touch because it gave us a really personal insight into how the characters lived their lives away from the cameras and film. I also really liked how it almost felt as if it continued from the previous Lego Movie film but still establishes the character types, relationships and their characteristics for those audiences who may have forgotten or not seen the original. By also introducing us to the plot and storyline through a vision of the future this actually really cleverly revealed part of the later plot within the film which made scenes throughout really engaging as we sought after how they came to happen and the twists along the way. Not only was the plot really well established but it also felt like a story so we essentially had no way of predicting what would happen next which made scenes thrilling and unpredictable. My favourite element of the film was definitely the emotional impact that the film had on us as an audience though, the film was not only funny for all audiences but it was actually hilarious! I thoroughly enjoyed the gags, jokes and really funny scenes that were throughout the film and so often that it left many of the audience in tears due to the sheer randomness and unique humour that it offered. This film is definitely one to be enjoyed by all!! Not only does this obviously make the film entertaining but it also kept it exciting and engaging because we were constantly engaged with what the characters were doing which helped it to be really exciting.

The film was also really unpredictable which I loved, not only did it makes scenes exciting because we had no idea of what would happen so we were regularly unprepared but it also made them genuine and realistic because we were constantly questioning what would happen next. I feel that the plot had a large impact on this, not only was the plot relayed to us cleverly from the beginning but it also showed ambition, it was easy to follow and it was also exciting and engaging too. It was fast paced too which meant that they weren't any boring scenes but it was definitely clear that the directors and actors had realy made an effort to push the boundaries and the bar of what audiences enjoy and expect from a movie like this, from varieties of characters to updated jokes, it really felt like an effort was made with this film which was really effective. The plot was very simple to follow too, as I've mentioned it felt like more of a story rather than a concrete plot which meant that it felt to us like we were following the various characters through a story and this really helped to get us actively involved in what the characters were doing! The plot is very random yes, but this is what helps it to flow so fluidly because it is set in a crazy different world which helps us to grasp the concept of the various characters and the world they live within. The film definitely uses this and develops throughout in a fun and simple way, the plot is simple yet fun to experience! I love the level of ambition shown here though, it is really unique and keeping the audience entertained and creating a strong emotional bond that not only helped us to laugh but also included really passionate and emotional sections which made the characters and their relationships seem genuine which made the film feel really engaging and interactive. I was also impressed with the character dialogue and seeing how the characters changed and evolved throughout the film too, not only does the humorous character dialogue help us to get involved with their relationships but they are also hilarious and it helps to personify and create effective and tangible character relationships. What makes the plot so great though is how it is based off of such a simple idea and plan, which yes has been used before but the way in which the characters execute it makes it so excitable and enjoyable for the audience. "Everything is so entertaining and simple to follow", actually that doesn't have the same ring to it does it? Damn. When it comes to sequels, it's always hard to strike a balance between replicating everything that was great about the first film, while telling a new and exciting story, but it's a balance that The Lego Movie 2 gets pretty much spot-on.

This film wasn't totally awesome though, my main issue and problem with this film is that i you haven't seen the original film then there will be so many jokes and puns that you will miss out on. Yes, characters are introduced well here, but for some audiences who are new to the series they definitely won't get a good grasp of who the characters are and their relationships are. I mentioned the opposite of this earlier but I genuinely feel from a perspective of seeing the first film that's how I feel, but from a newcomer this will be a difficult concept to grasp. It definitely feels like you need to have knowledge from the first film to fully experience this film, it definitely tries to do this here but it's about creating a balance of continuity but also supporting new audiences and this film doesn't do that very well. I also was a little disappointed in how long emotional scenes were given for us to really grasp them and soak them in, these seemed fairly washed out and disappeared very quickly, what would have been nice would be to experience these a little bit more as it would create even more genuine and relatable characters for us.

Overall, I would give this film an 8.5. I was really impressed at how enjoyable and humourous that this film was which made the film a pleasure to watch from start to end and also it was really easy and simple to understand too! I enjoyed seeing the character relationship models evolve and adapt, as well as how effectively the film gave off an emotional impact to the audiences too, the film was unpredictable which kept it interesting and exciting. However, it just doesn't feel as if enough work was done to accommodate new audiences which can seriously hinder opinions for newcomers as many of the events and jokes will be lost without the knowledge and experience from the first film. Would I recommend this film though? Definitely, without a doubt! Whether you're young or old, this film will definitely entertain you and provide roughly an hour and a half worth of film entertainment! The plot is also really enjoyable and exciting too so it really is a great film for all, however I would definitely recommend watching the first film before, just to maximise viewing entertainment!

Thank you for reading my review, I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did watching the film and writing this review! Have a good day! :)
