Deadpool 2

Wisecracking mercenary Deadpool meets Russell, an angry teenage mutant who lives at an orphanage. When Russell becomes the target of Cable -- a genetically enhanced soldier from the future -- Deadpool realizes that he'll need some help saving the boy from such a superior enemy.

The question of "original is best" is such a well known saying for films when second, third and even fourth installments are brought out after the first. Is that the case with this though? In short yes, original is best. But that doesn't mean that the second can't be good as well does it? I've been waiting to see this film for a really long time and even though it didn't disappoint I do feel that it could've been maybe just a little bit better. Onto the review!

As always I'll start with what I enjoyed and liked about the film and there really is a lot to share here, I mean for starters I love the playful nature from the first film and there is no exception in this film either; it is absolutely full to the brim of jokes and parts that make the audience realise this is the only film that will break these typical film rules to really play around and have fun. I loved this and I honestly feel that if you were to claim that Ryan Reynolds was the most perfect man for the job then I really wouldn't have much of an argument otherwise because he just seems to fit the role so well. This really shines to the audience which just adds more to the film. I like the playfulness of the film too, it makes it really unique and keeps audiences coming back - evidently. I was also really impressed with the use of lighting and camera shots throughout, I feel that they allowed the audience to have a great perception of how the characters were feeling but in a different way, by not going too close but just close enough for the audience to feel engaged. Speaking of engagement I love how this film constantly breaks the fourth wall of film! Having Ryan Reynolds constantly communicating with the audience really allowed the audience to 'get involved' with the film and what was going on in it. The use of lighting too really impressed me, I feel that the scenes and landscapes were all very well laid out and represented using good camera shots and angles too. Aswell as using camera lighting to bring out the great, vibrant colours of the multiple city skies that we saw the characters travelling through.

I also really liked the Skyfall sequence references too - was very clever and evoked a positive reaction from the audience which was definitely welcomed. One of the main things I like about this film is how unpredictable it is, always making turns and surprising the audience and that's exactly what it did by positioning the villain 'Cable' as the typical villain. Compared to at the end having him join forces with Deadpool and even evoking a slight emotional response from the audience too when he re-collected his thoughts of his dead family killed by the child, the way in which the film was able to change moods was really good and impressive. The variety of quick, snappy transition shots between not only scenes but also between characters and places was really interesting, the way in which one minute the audience were following one set of characters and then we are dragged over to another location. This helped us to feel involved and understand what was going on within the film. And even though the film had a variety of effective tense and emotional scenes that were assisted by the great choice of audio, the film also completely delivered the action/gore that we expect from not only Deadpool but also from an action film. There was never a dead or dull moment where Deadpool wasn't killing someone, which to be honest kept the audience on edge to find out who his next victim would be and just how they would go about dying really.

I feel that the plot was very fast paced, the audience were taken from scene to scene very quickly which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it did make the plot of the film fairly unclear why it was happening for me. And like I said, I really liked the Cable plot twist and I feel that this added a lot to the film. I really feel that it was a great way to clear up the story! So great camera skills, good plot, good characters eh? What's wrong with it? Spill the beans.

Well, for me there just wasn't as much in the second film to justify being up there with the first Deadpool film really. At points in the film I felt there were some small plot holes and flaws which left me and plenty of others confused and questioning what was actually happeining and why. And this can be a real death warrant to a film, but to be fair these were only small parts and elements of the film so I'll let it off. I also said I liked the jokes but maybe some of them were a bit too cheesy, it's funny when they're used in the first film but if you use the same gags over and over again then they start to get a bit annoying which is kinda what happened here, just not massively annoying. And there were elements that were quite difficult to believe, although it is a superhero film so I guess that's probably why! The other problem is actually with the character Deadpool in this film, there just seemed to be something ever so slightly dishonest about this character, something false about the boundaries drawn around his sadism and his rage. Even though the film did a great job of humouring the audience and making itself stand out through ideas such as breaking the fourth wall and using time specific jokes to humour the audience; it didn't seem to take any real creative risks with either the plot/story or the characters. It was very much similar to what we saw from the first film, just a little bit worse. I also didn't leave the cinema with a sense of engagement that I feel from most other top films and especially the first Deadpool film, it just really didn't seem to do it for me unfortunately despite how much I wanted this film to wow me!

I was also really surprised by the lack of people in the cinema watching it too, it hasn't even been out that long but the cinema seemed pretty empty, maybe it hasn't had the big reception that it was hoping? Maybe so but I think however good this film is it'll always be in the shadow of its predecessor.

My overall rating of this film is a 7.5/10, it was good but I feel that however good it would've been it would've suffered because of the success of the first film unfortunately. Also my apologies for no review or posts in nearly a month, I had exams but they're over now so hopefully many more reviews are on the way! :)

Thanks for reading my review, I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
