Black Christmas

Hawthorne College is quieting down for the holidays as students travel home to spend time with their families. But as Riley and her sorority sisters prepare to deck the halls with seasonal parties, a mysterious cloaked figure starts to leave a bloody trail throughout the campus. Refusing to become hapless victims, Riley and her friends decide to band together and fight back against the psychotic Christmas killer.

Hello everyone. It’s Laura, yes I’m back again, I hope you are well. Today, I saw Black Christmas (2019) and I wanted to share my thoughts with you. So, lets dive straight in:

Black Christmas (2019) is directed by Sophia Takal and tells the story of Riley and her sorority sisters who are staying at college over the Christmas break and end up being stalked by a group of mysterious figures intent on killing them. Black Christmas (2019) is, also, a remake of a remake, of a remake, of a remake. Okay, its not quite that bad but it is the third time this film has been made and I will admit this made me incredibly sceptical about whether this film would be any good. Well that and the spoiler filled trailer. If you haven’t seen the trailer, don’t watch it! It will spoil some of the bigger twists in the film. If you do decide to watch it and then see the film, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Anyway, there were many reasons to be sceptical about this film and I have to say I went in with very low expectations but I believe that this actually made the film better.

Now I’m not saying this film is that bad, it’s an enjoyable watch but it does have some flaws which I will get onto later. The film is visually beautiful, the campus of Hawthorne college in the snow is lovely, the girls bedrooms all have an independent feel to them it really is lovely. Imogen Poots gives a standout performance; in fact, she is the best member of the cast by far and the film is good fun if you take it at face value. A fun horror flick set at Christmas.

Now like I said even though I enjoyed watching this film and would watch it again it has some serious problems. The first and the biggest is that the film is not that scary, when a horror film isn’t scary then it really doesn’t have much else to offer, which makes it useless. It plays out more like a thriller with a few attempts at a jump scare and these will get some people but I remained unaffected by them and actually found them annoying. The film also suffers from being incredibly predictable and it just gets silly. Especially the first ten minutes. Honestly, I have never seen anything so pathetic, it is a terrible opener for this film. The film also drags in places (Despite its 92-minute runtime) and I believe the character of Landon was incredibly unnecessary. Landon doesn’t get enough screen time to be given the amount of weight he does and the fact he is key to the ending is also a little annoying consider we don’t know anything about him. It feels like he was just thrown in, in order for there to be a few decent males in the film and it would have been fine without him to be honest.

Despite the flaws the films message is clear. This film is made for women and is all about women fighting for equality and to be heard in a society dominated by men. There are several scenes with creepy males who are either students, a teacher and even a security guard that made my skin crawl. It’s a feminist film! With a message about rape culture that needs to be listened to. And one of the best scenes in the film is where Kris, Marty and Jesse help Riley stand up to her rapist and they sing a version of ‘Up on the Housetop’ where the lyrics have been changed to reflect the sexual assault. From a women’s perspective, it is brilliant.

Overall, I would give Black Christmas (2019) 5/10. It’s a fun flick and if you fancy something that is a slightly different pace to the traditional Christmas film then its worth giving it a go. If you give it a chance, you might end up like me and enjoy it even if you can acknowledge that it is not that great.

And that’s what I thought of Black Christmas (2019). Thank you for reading my review, I hope it gave you an insight into the film and I hope you enjoyed reading it. I’ll see you next time.
